Celebrating Independence

Quoting Prof. Tarun Chaturvedi, ''As nations progress, the generations increasingly become dumb''

Yet again at 15th August we celebrate our independence. We celebrate our independence and we celebrate our ignorance. The independence that someone else earned and we inherited.

Each generation has to earn its own independence. We shouldn't go to war like our independence Heroes because WE JUST CAN'T. We have become too realistic, too practical. Its true that Everyone wants a Bhagat Singh but nobody wants Bhagat Singh to be from their own home.

Quoting Piyush Mishra from the movie Gulal:

''o re bismil kash aate aaj tum hindustaan,
dekhte ki mulq saara yeh tashan mein til mein hai..
aaj ka launda yeh kehta hum to bismil thak gaye,
apni aazaadi to bhaiya laundiya ke dil mein hai..
aaj ke jalson mein bislmil ek goonga ga raha,
aur behron ka woh rela naachta mehfil mein hai..
haath ki khaadi banane ka zamana lad gaya,
aaj to chaddi bhi silti englison ki mill mein hai..
dekhna hai zor kitna baazu-e-qaatil mein hai,
waqt aane pe bata denge tujhe e aasman,
hum abhi se kya bataein kya humare dil mein hai..
sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab humare dil mein hai..
sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab humare dil mein hai..''

This blog is not a criticism because the author (me) himself belongs to this generation; but we have seen in the past that if targeted in the right manner through powerful expressions like Rang De Basanti, this generation still can prove that it has got that spark left..

The critical thing for us is not to get too involved in our own everyday lives so that world outside becomes just an illusion to us. We have to accept that our country is everyday living in a war both external and internal. There is external terrorism hitting us at places where we are most vulnerable and there is internal civil war in form of Alpha, Bodo, Naxals which has or is reaching most parts of the country. Try surving in a Naxal area once you get a job posting there. We must wake up to this reality.

It may sound faff to management students, but still whatever we do in our lives, we need to look at the bigger picture. The most important thing for any living being is independence, more important than roti, kapda,makaan..

As we cherish our independence lets work to restore and recreating it..Lets keep the spirit of independence high and lets work to earn our independence..Someone else won't do it for us again..

Imagine these lines being said by someone at the time he was being hanged:

Quoting Asfak Ullah Khan:

''Buzdilon ko hi maut se darte dekha,

Garche sau bar unhe roz hi marte dekha..

Maut se veer ko humne nahi darte dekha,

Taktha-e-maut pe bhi khel hi karte dekha''

Happy Independence

Jai Hind

  1. Nice thoughts, Chaitanya!!! You are absolutely right in saying that "Everyone wants a Bhagat Singh but nobody wants Bhagat Singh to be from their own home." But don't you think movies like 'rang de basanti' exist only in fairytails, not in reality..We, the people of this generation, are gifted with very 'SHORT TERM MEMORY'. So we tend to forget anything and everything that doesnt have direct implication on us, be it mumbai blasts or naxal attacks. We have developed inhuman capability to adjust.

  2. would b able to comment if u put forth ur views a bit more expressively.. as in u havent exactly said what is the prob, neither what solution u propose.. u say that everybody wants a Bhagat Singh, but nobody wants him to be from ones own family.. I say that things were the same back in 1947 too.. If u say that there is no spirit of sacrifice in todays generation, think twice, as it is in the not too distant past that we won Kargil.. and as far as Ulfa, Bodo Naxalites issues go, they are more of a socio-economic issue.. that requires a lot of thought and effort, and awareness to be created.. but all said and done, we all need to ask us only one thing..

How many times has one of us helped a person in need cross a road?? if we have ignored that person, all the talk about improving our country is nothing but crap..

m not saying that one shouldn't be aware of what the issues r, but start by helping people around u.. parents, family, friends, colleagues.. if all of us do that only then can we take it to the next level..

  4. Very interesting comments!!!

But it’s a very sad fact that when we talk of reality we seldom do that in reality!!!

Ok...lets celebrate one more independence day and.. many more to come in future….but are we really serious about doing something…..or it’s a mere rhetoric….

Let me make it more clear….we talk of bravery…..but what about humanity….compassion…..feelings…..towards those who are still living in hapless condition.

Bravery without thought is good to make news…..to become so called media loved Hero…..But, to help, those living in meager circumstances….in silence,.... is the real heroism without any particle of doubt.

Why are we always supposed to become a martyr….why can’t we do something, which we are capable of doing in reality!!!

Remember ….a small step taken in the earth is worth more than a million steps taken in a dream!!!

  5. @waquaar & Anshul:
i agree with what you have said but dude its just that we usually get away with talking about making people cross roads and helping our neighbor..These statements help us to avoid our involvement in something higher and bigger..Ohh please come on lets move beyond to higher issues.. we are the people aren't as powerless as we prove ourselves to be time and again..its just that we don't want to do it and talk about doing small generic crap!..
not to sound a hypocrite, i would tell you that i have personally seen and done a lot of small and big changes already to the society..
and most of it is silent and not heroic..
but frankly Anshul creating a blog named 'gettingindiaready' and then saying a statement that you should be doing something that is realistic seems sad to me..why just refuse to think Big????nobody stops you from doing small actionable thing but its high time that you make big things a part of your possibilities and realism of you really feel for the cause..
after all Bhagat Singh was just another 23 year old student, if he would have stuck to his realities and small steps and many other like him, then you probably would have been washing toilet of some Britisher this day..

  7. I would'nt have left a comment as i am bored of consistently writing "good one chaitanya!!" One more thought provoking article! But we expect it from you!

Was going through the comments which were as interesting as the article! One particularly caught my eye.

"How many times has one of us helped a person in need cross a road?? if we have ignored that person, all the talk about improving our country is nothing but crap.."

I may not know about others, but I along with many small slum dwelling kids, can vouch for Mr.Jha here, who can tirelessly work teaching them ways of life and having fun at the same time....! And when a man truly works for a cause, he earns the right to awaken his contemporaries.... I sincerely hope Mr.Waquaar also follows what he writes...!

"A true hero is born when he is tested by time..."

  8. Well...I think you misunderstood me.....

What I was talking about: " Think globally but act locally."

What I think is needed is realism....Remember its because of our virtual thinking, that we are still planning to dream something!!!

Getting India Ready....not in thoughts....but in actions....and when every body will stop being sad on the thought of doing...India would achieve complete freedom....

Bhagat singh did great...no doubt about that....but we need people who won't die for India....rather, they will endeavor to achieve something while living....

Ok let me take out some of the realistic & achievable gaols:

1] Why can't we stop wasting our pocket money in partying...in contributions towards our selffulfilling prophesies....rather create a fund that will help poor people in getting their daughter married.....that will help a boy getting proper education....nobody tried it before in any B-school!!!

2] Why can't we do something about stopping alcoholism by setting an example to the society by ourself....remember we can't expect a addicted India to do/dream something for the good health of our society...

3] Why can't we celebrate world environment day...while we are seems to be concerned about ourselves!!! And if we planted few sapling here & there, who is going to care about them??

These are some of the realistic goals....which can be achieved without much dreaming!!!

But what is needed::: " A true will to act...rather than just..."

  10. The post made for a very interesting read, even more so, the comments.

The devil indeed does lie in the details. Every little bit that we do is eventually going to show up in the bigger picture. Whether it is helping the less fortunate or doing your bit for the environment. We are not all in a position to create drastic changes, but we are very much equipped to deal with the smaller but equally significant problems.

However, I do not agree that nothing is being done about making our country a better place. All the comments show, that people are indeed aware and have a national conscience. Even within my peer group, many people are active volunteers for various causes. Yes, there is a lot left to be done. Many more will have to take up the onus as well. But all is not lost. The change is being set in motion
